What does the word Islam mean and when does it appear?

The word Islam means surrender, abandoning oneself to Allah. Islam appears in 610 of the Christian era in the Arabian Desert. It was founded by Muhammad, although Muslims do not accept this; for them Allah Muhammad founded Islam through him. Muhammad is not the equivalent of Christ. Mohammed never claimed to be God, but the transmitter of the revelation that Allah brings men. Muhammad’s name in Spanish means: praised, exalted.

What do we commemorate on Vesak?

Traditionally, the date of birth of Buddha is known as Vesak or Visakah bid and is commemorated with a large Buddhist festival celebrating the birth, enlightenment and death of Buddha on the full moon day of May, except in a leap year when the festival is held in June. As 2015 is a leap year, Buddhists are going to celebrate Vesak on June 1.

The origins of Vesak

Vesak has its origin in the first month of the Hindu calendar. It is the holiest day of the Buddhist calendar because it celebrates the lighting of Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha. All Asian and Buddhist countries celebrate Vesak presence since 1950 when it was formalized in the first Conference of the World Fellowship of Buddhists, held in Sri Lanka.
