What is the Epiphany?

While in the East the Epiphany is the feast of the Incarnation, in the West this feast is celebrated with the revelation of Jesus to the pagan world, the real epiphany. The celebration revolves around the worship of which was subject to the infant Jesus by the Magi (Mt 2: 1-12) as a symbol of recognition of the pagan world that Christ is El Salvador of all mankind.

Until the fourth century the Church began to celebrate on this day the Epiphany. As the Christmas party in the West, East epiphany born contemporaneously in response of the church to celebrate pagan sun. This explains that the Epiphany is called in the East: Hagia phota, that is, the holy light. This party was born in East and Gaul celebrated in mid-s IV where traces have been a big party for the year 361 AD found. The celebration of this holiday is slightly post-Christmas.

Between 120 and 140 AD the Gnostics sought to Christianize the festivities celebrating the baptism of Jesus. Following the Gnostic belief, Christians Basilidian celebrated the Incarnation of the Word in the humanity of Jesus when he was baptized. Epiphany is about giving a Christian sense to say that Christ thus proves to be the true light and Christians celebrate his birth.

The feast of the Epiphany

The feast of the Epiphany originated in the Eastern Church. Unlike Europe, January 6 in both Egypt and Saudi, solstice was celebrated with very ancient mythical evocations. Epiphany explains that pagans celebrated the winter solstice and increased light at thirteen days have given this change; it also tells us that pagans made a significant and sumptuous feast at the temple of Korah.
